Christine Counsell and Steve Mastin, renowned educators and leaders in the field of literacy and curriculum development, visited Cornwall Education Learning Trust this week to deliver a series of inspiring workshops to both pupils and teaching staff on the transformative potential of the Opening Worlds curriculum.
Opening Worlds, an educational programme is designed to unlock the potential of every pupil by fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a love for learning.
During their visit, Counsell and Mastin, both passionate advocates for progressive teaching methods, shared their wealth of experience and insights into how Opening Worlds can enhance the learning experience for pupils of all abilities. Their engaging workshops were tailored to inspire and empower both teachers and pupils, with a particular focus on promoting literacy through imaginative exercises.
Counsell, a leader in curriculum development, emphasised the importance of making learning meaningful and relevant. She took to Twitter/X to say:
"I was in heaven on Wednesday, teaching Y6 in Newquay Junior Academy and working with the inspirational Cornwall Education Learning Trust. What a privilege to teach a full Opening Worlds lesson... There is nothing like watching children grow in joy and confidence in using rich, powerful, new vocabulary."
The event was hosted across three CELT academies: Pondhu Primary School, Newquay Junior Academy and Brannel School. It was met with enthusiasm from both pupils and teachers, who participated in a series of interactive sessions designed to demonstrate how Opening Worlds works in practice. Teachers were given practical strategies to implement the programme within their own classrooms.
CELT's primary and junior academies have committed to incorporating the Opening Worlds approach into humanities lessons, ensuring that pupils in every academy have access to a knowledge-rich humanities curriculum.
